Steven Kern joined the Gates Foundation in January 2013 and serves as Deputy Director, Quantitative Sciences, within the Integrated Development team in Global Health. Steven’s background includes 14 years as professor in Pharmaceutics, Anesthesiology, and Bioengineering at the University of Utah where he was also the co-investigator for the NIH funded Pediatric Pharmacology Research Unit based in Utah. Steven comes to us from Novartis Pharma AG in Basel, Switzerland where he was the Global Head of Pharmacology Modeling in the Modeling & Simulation group.
While at Novartis, along with managing the pharmacology modeling group, he provided modeling support to the anti-malarial compounds that Novartis produces and has under development. He has published extensively in areas of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling, applying principles of control systems engineering to novel drug delivery systems, and in pediatric clinical pharmacology. He has also led clinical pharmacology studies at all drug development phases in adults and in children.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, a Master’s degree in Bioengineering from Penn State University, and a doctoral degree in Bioengineering from the University of Utah. He maintains an adjunct appointment in Pharmaceutics and Bioengineering at the University of Utah and in Clinical Pharmacology at Ulsan College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea.
